BIP SXM @Caribbean IP Round table
The Director of BIP SXM, Mrs. Vincentia Rosen-Sandiford, was pleased to attend and participate in the Caribbean Intellectual Property (IP) Round Table discussion held in Anguilla on July 22, 2024.
The round table, organized by the law firm Cervieri Monsuarez and its Caribbean Managing Partner & Attorney at Law, Mrs. Keesha Fleming-Lake (LLM), aimed to engage officials from neighboring IP offices in discussions on IP-related topics in the Caribbean region, such as the modernization and potential synchronization of IP legislation. Dra. Virginia Cervieri of Cervieri Monsuarez gave an insightful presentation on new acceptable trademarks and how counterfeit goods are managed in Uruguay.
During the event, Mrs. Rosen-Sandiford spoke about the intellectual property rights framework in Sint Maarten. The discussion provided an opportunity for invited IPOs and representatives to share insights on operational challenges and opportunities, new or proposed legislation, use and cancellation for non-use and other relevant IP matters within their jurisdictions.
Mrs. Rosen-Sandiford extends her gratitude to Mrs. Fleming-Lake (LLM) and Cervieri Monsuarez for the invitation and looks forward to future collaborations on regional IP initiatives.
In closing, Mrs. Rosen-Sandiford shared that BIP SXM's participation in this regional initiative aligns with the Bureau's Communication and IP Awareness (CIPA SXM) efforts. It provides a platform to inform regional IP professionals about business opportunities and the necessity of IP registration in Sint Maarten. "BIP SXM wants entrepreneurs and businesses to use and leverage rights, but for this to happen, we need to inform both our local and regional IP professionals about the IP framework in Sint Maarten, as they are the ones advising their clients on where to file, with the aid of recognized Sint Maarten trademark representatives."
